The road surface being removed prior to excavating the footings for the west half of the new bridge. These will go down to the remains of the massive foundations of the 1924 concrete bridge.

The 1924 mass concrete was found to be quite badly cracked due to the demolition work in 1970 .
Extensive remains of the towpath ramp retaining wall were also found quite close to the surface.
