Pike Bridge Project

The Work Underway Picture Gallery -  Western Side

The western half of Pike Bridge, which is the part formed in 1924, is significantly wider than the eastern half. When the 1924 concrete extension was added, it was stipulated by the Company of Proprietors of the Stroudwater Navigation that the canal had to stay open throughout the bridge construction. As a result, the foundations of the 1924 were constructed behind the banks of the canal which would have remained full of water. It is not obvious how the formwork on the 1924 bridge was erected so as to be able to support the massive weight of the setting concrete whilst maintaining navigation clearance underneath. The formwork on the new bridge was able to rely on the support of the ground underneath.
